A numerical study of the PDMS membrane deformation in pneumatic microvalves
Theintegration of high-density mirovalvesiscritical for some of the applications of rnicrofluidics in manipulation of cells/particles.Pneumatic microvalves have attracted extensive research and application interests due to their simplicity in integration and operation. This paper reports the numerical analysis of factors influencing the deformation of thin PDMS membrane in a pneumatic microvalve.A 3D model with fluid channels and a thin elastic membrane was built in COMSOL Multiphysics. The mode1ing results are confirmed by comparing to published data. The deformation of the membrane is systematica11y studied to determine the effect of size and pressure. The maximum displacement coefficients weredetermined using modelled data. This paper provides important guide1ines for the design and app1ication of pneumatic microvalvesin microfluidics.
