Progressive Improvement of Underwater Glider for High Performance

  As long endurance,moveable underwater platforms,underwater gliders have presented great potential applications in oceanographic observation,inshore water monitoring and resource surveying,and marineland production and environment monitoring.This paper reviews the primary design issues and possible developments of the underwater gliders.Family configuration is proposed in Section 2 based on navigation and task requirements of underwater gliders.Io Section 3,hull design of underwater gliders is discussed from the point of lightweight material selection in terms of specific modulus and strength,bucking resistance and loading capacity,and buoyancy variation and compensation.low drag hydrodynamic shape for underwater gliders is analyzed in Section 4.Formulation of hydrodynamic lift and drag of flat plate wings of underwater gliders is presented in Section 5.Kinematics of uniform rectilinear gliding is reviewed in Section 6,including geometry of gliding,angle of attack,horizontal component of gliding velocity and mission range.Finally in Section 7,issues of future considerations 缸e summarized.
