Treatment and Additives Influence on Compression Properties of Steel Foam

In this work the effect of constituents of materials and treatment conditions used to produce foam steels on its compression strength characteristics were studied. In the experimental work, carbon steel powder was mixed with up to 20%mill scale was used.Glass powder was added in range 3~12%as filler with the addition of carbon powder up to 0.5%.Slip Reaction Foam Sintering(SRFS)process was used to produce green samples. The green samples of these materials were sintered at 1000℃ and 1200℃.Compression test was carried out on sintered samples.A 24 factorial design was applied based on the experimental results.A regression model was deduced to evaluate the compression properties of steel foam dependence on the different additives and sintering temperature.Based on the experimental results, the mutual interactions effect of addition of mill scale, carbon and glass powder to the iron powder together with sintering temperature on the compression strength of produced foam steel were investigated by applying factorial design. Also, the magnitude effect of different constituents and sintering temperature was estimated. The analysis the experimental results showed that carbon addition has the highest positive effect while the interaction combination between glass powder with mill scale has the highest negative effect on compression properties. The results of the driven model was found to be in good agreement with the experimental. Also, the application of derived model successfully applied on the previously published results.
