Numerical Investigation on Effect of Strip Addition on Solidification Behavior in Bloom Continuous Casting

Steel strip feeding into mold is a technique to increase the ratio of equiaxed grain and result in decreasing centerline segregation in continuous casting(CC)process producing bloom.A comprehensive model has been developed to describe the phase change process of strip feeding into mold. All the essential physical considerations including fluid flow, heat transfer and phase change are incorporated. The melting of the moving strip was compared with the experimental measurements. Then the validated model was used to predict the melting characteristics during strip feeding. The effect of strip addition on the fluid flow, temperature distribution and shell solidification in CC mold were investigated. The calculated results indicate that some hot melt would firstly solidified to form a sheath on the cold strip after the strip just be fed into the mold, and then melt gradually due to the effect of superheat of melt. The turbulent flow in the mold is enhanced due to the fast moving of strip. The phase change behavior of the moving strip cools down the fluid nearby and therefore redistributes the melt superheat of slab liquid core.
