Assessment of natural disaster using social media data
With the development of internet,social media has become an important part of our daily life,and allows us to share and exchange information.Different with other traditional media form,social media such as Twitter not only makes us obtain information as soon as possible and comments,but also makes ourselves participate in,and even become a part of the event.In recent years,researchers regard social media as a way of emergency early waring and achieve some efficient results.However,this question still at its early stage.In this paper,we conduct a case study about hurricane Sandy,a national disaster happened in 2012,from a more holistic way.On the basis of analyzing some characteristics of Twitter users activities,we would like to use the activities or other characteristics to assess the damage degree during Sandy within the American,help local government establish an early warning system and find the most serious damage areas,thus providing a timely support.
