Monitoring of velocity profile and wall thickness in pipe flow using ultrasonic velocity profile and lamb wave technique

Non-destructive monitoring and evaluation arecrucial in many engineering fields, such as chemical and nuclear power industries.Recently, ultrasound technique is widely usedin power plant for monitoring the flow rate and pipe inspection,i.e.,erosion/corrosion.These monitoring can be done independently by Time of Flight(TOF)method. For the pipe inspection(pipe wall thickness),TOF was most often used in industrial application. The measurement is done by measuring the time-of-flight of bulk waves in the material. Also, plate thickness can be measured with the photoacoustic excitation of Lamb waves.Lamb waves velocity depends on the thickness of the material plate. Therefore,a measure of the velocity of the Lamb wave yields a measure of the average plate thickness between transmitter and receiver. For the flow rate measurement, however,TOF methods needs calibration. Therefore, another technique, which is based on Doppler shift frequency, was developed. In the previous study, monitoring of both flow rate and the plate thickness is not performed simultaneously. Thus,in this study, the simultaneous monitoring of both velocity and pipe thickness is performedconcurrently.Lamb wave tomography and Doppler shift frequency are utilized for pipe thickness and flow rate measurement. For velocity measurement, only one transducer is used as both transmitter and receiver. However, for plate thickness measurement, additional receiver transducer is placed downstream the flaw. Also, the effect of pipe thickness on velocity profile will be discussed further.
