Estimation of Small Droplet Collision Efficiencies
The classical theory of droplet collision is useful only down to a collision efficiency of about 0.07.Therefore,accurate modeling of in-cloud icing has been impossible when droplets are small, wind speed is low,or the object is big.We present results of icing wind tunnel experiments where the collision efficiency is small, and use fluid dynamics simulations to explain the differences between the experimental results and the theory. We confirm that the history term in the classical trajectory theory becomes relevant at small collision efficiencies.Including this effect, and applying the integral over the size distribution instead of using the median volume diameter, shows that accurate theoretical modelling of icing at very small collision efficiencies is feasible.
