Spongy ice and natural icing conditions
It has been suggested that researchers should treat the ice that accretes on structures from fresh water as spongy, that is,made up of a mixture of water and ice. When this spongy ice is squeezed, water is forced out as the ice matrix is compressed. This study compiles data on conditions in which spongy ice has been observed and on conditions in which the accreted ice is not spongy. This comparison shows that the wind tunnel experiments in which spongy ice forms are generally not consistent with natural structural icing conditions.
