Nonlinear Numerical Simulation of Galloping Characteristics of 500kV Crescent-Shaped Iced Quad Bundle Conductor

Conductor galloping is a common phenomenon during the operation of transmission line, which may result in electrical and mechanical accidents such as tower collapses and interphase flashover. In this paper, the multi-span 3DOF(3 degree-of-freedom)dynamic model for conductor-insulator is established, and aerodynamic parameters of 500kV crescent-shaped iced quad bundle conductor are calculated by Fluent, and then the research on conductor galloping is done in detail.Based on the explicit central difference integral algorithm, the galloping situation under different wind velocities, ice thicknesses, and conductor types are discussed, and the results under sudden ice shedding are analyzed. It comes to the conclusions: between the minimum and maximum wind velocity that lead to gallop, the amplitude increases almost linearly corresponding to the wind velocity;the increasing of ice thickness makes the conductor easier to gallop, however, too large thickness may be adverse and break the galloping;under the same ice cover;the conductor with small section is easier to produce galloping;sudden ice shedding causes the galloping amplitude to decrease rapidly, leading to a small vibration.
