Atmospheric Icing Morpha and Condition Assessment of Glass Insulators at South China based on Image Processing

Ice or snow storms might cause many severe power grid accidents, such as insulator flashover, conductor galloping, communication interruption, transmission line trip and break, even tower fracture.Image data, meteorological data, and tension data recorded by Disaster(Icing)Warning System in China Southern Power Grid were analyzed. These data were from 92 atmospheric icing events on transmission lines, which occurred in November 2012 to February 2013 at South China.Based on the morpha characteristics of the severest ice during each event, the atmospheric icing morpha of the in-service insulators was classified into snow, glaze, light rime, moderate rime, heavy rime and partial rime. With the development of computer graphics, scholars started to research insulator condition monitoring based on video or image processing.Shed spacing and overhang are factors to evaluate icing condition.Based on GrabCut image segmentation, the representations of in-service glass insulator icing condition that graphical shed spacing and graphical shed overhang are proposed by recognizing convexity defect. The contour of insulator string from images before icing could be seen as a concave polygon, and its concavity would decrease with ice accretion. The contour may even become a convex polygon with severe ice accretion. Therefore, the contour of insulator string from images may reflect icing situation of in-service glass insulators.Once convexity defects of icing insulator contours are obtained, according to the starting point, ending point and depth, the shed spacing is approximately equal to the distance between the starting point and ending point, the shed overhang is approximately equal to the convexity defect depth. The results show that typical changing curves of micrometeorological parameters and maximum tension during the icing and ice-melting process were presented for six typical icing morpha. The calculation method can be applied to recognize the most serious icing condition that the air shed spacing is completely bridged,as well as bridging position including left, right,or both sides of the insulator strings in the images.
