An Optical Icing Detection Method for Transmission Lines
Aiming at the overcoming the weaknesses of the main online ice monitoring approaches for transmission lines, this paper introduces a method based on optical technology for monitoring ice coating on transmission lines. With a line laser irradiating the power line,an image acquisition device is used to capture images of the area exposed to laser before and after icing.Considering the significant difference between the area irradiated by laser and the rest in the image,it is easy to extract the contour of the former with multi-scale wavelet edge detection method. At last, the ice thickness on the power lines could be calculated through comparing with the ice-free transmission line.Under laboratory conditions, the ice thickness error could be within 1mm,when the distance between image acquisition device and the wire is about 20cm.In addition to facilitating image processing, the line laser could also be used for lighting, which makes the method could be widely used for monitoring the ice coating on transmission lines all day.
