Failure Analysis of an Icing 220kV ACSR Strain Clamp
A strain clamp at an icing 220kV cable was fractured in the process of melting ice.A failure analysis was consequently carried out.Based on visual inspections,Scanning Electron Microscope(SEM),metallographic and mechanical tests,it was concluded that the uneven compressed surfaces and deformations on the steel core during installing caused defects and bad contacts in the strain clamp. As a result,in a process of melting ice,a large current generated substantial heat in the part of poor contact, which altered the materials microstructures then significantly weakened its mechanical strength. To prevent the accident, some procedures must be taken in the process of installing, such as ensuring compression die surfaces clean and smooth, applying proper alignment of the steel eye with the dead-end body in compression, applying proper lubricant to the dies and full compressions to the entire portion of the steel eye from the start knurl all the way to the end, limiting the maximum current of melting.
