RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN ALTITUDE AND OPERATING SPEED IN STRAIGHT SECTIONS OF HIGHWAY WITH TWO LANES IN PLATEAU

There is directly relationship between vehicle speed and traffic crashes. In order to improve traffic safety in high altitude area, the relationship between altitude and vehicle speed was analyzed in this paper.Vehicle speed is affected by many factors such as road alignment, slope, road condition. To minimize the influence of factors except altitude on vehicle speed, this paper selected straight sections of 109 national highways(second-class highway with two lanes)in Qinghai-Tibet plateau as research objects.Data were collected using Metrocount.Based on the significant analysis and regression fitting, the influence of altitude to cars and trucks speed as well as the speed difference between them were analyzed and models of speed and altitude were built. The results showed that on second-class highway with two lanes in Qinghai-Tibet plateau, the drop rate of the car speed was smaller than that of truck speed. When a truck travelled up to 3300 meters high or a car travelled up to 3700 meters high, the vehicle speed would gradually decrease, and the decreasing rate would increase with the increase of altitude. With the increase of altitude, the speed difference between car and truck gradually increased. When vehicles travelled up to 4320 meters high, speed difference between the two would be more than 20km/h.
