Facing the Challenge of Future Ageing Australia: From Health to Care
1 Introduction Ageing population has always been a big challenge to well-developed countries such as United States of America, United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia.According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, the population of Australia has been growing and ageing due to low fertility levels, increasing life expectancy, and baby boom cohort between 1946 and 1965.In 2014, the percentages of population with age greater than 65 and 85 are about 15% and 2% respectively. It is estimated that by 2064, these percentages will be increased to 23% and 5%.Figure 1 gives an overview of the ageing population challenges in Australia. From this figure, it is clear that such high percentages and movements have direct impacts on both the society and economics of Australia. It also has direct influences to the transport plan for a future productive and active Australia (Moving People 2030 Task Force, 2013).
