Mammary development-windows of opportunity and risk

A cows presence in the herd ultimately reflects her ability to efficiently produce milk as a function of her mammary glands development and synthetic capacity that develop throughout the course of her lifetime.Successfully reaching this point in her life also comes at considerable economic cost, which is upwards of $2500 in the United States. From some angles, the processes driving mammary gland development are similar across species;from other angles the biological processes and influences in replacement heifers are distinct.Ultimately the course of mammary development is coordinately linked to various developmental and reproductive states, and is sensitive to a wide range of cues, ranging from endocrine signals to diet, the environment, the surrounding tissues and cell types, and their interaction.Given that the number of epithelial cells in the udder is proportional to milk yield potential, efforts to identify and understand the challenges and the opportunities during mammary growth stands to improve animal productivity, welfare and economic efficiency.
