Recent Progress in DNA Biosensors for On-site and Real-time Detections in Dairy Cow Nutrition and Milk Quality

On-site and real-time detection of components in milk, such as nutrients, adulterants, microorganisms andcontaminants, play important roles in lowering the costs of milk production and improving the quality of the milk. While it is well recognized that sensors for these components are very useful for on-site and real-time detection, few such sensors are commercially available.Major challenges include lack of general strategies a) to obtain a single class of molecules for a broad range of targets;b) to improve selectivity in order to overcome interferences from other components in the milk, c) to translate the selective binding into observable signals, and d) to tune the detection ranges to match the thresholds defined by the regulation agencies.
