Sodium Butyrate Ameliorates High-Concentrate Diet-Induced Inflammation in theRumen Epithelium of Dairy Goats

Introduction To increase the milk yield, high-concentrate diet is used in intensive farming. However, a high-concentrate diet induces the depression of the rumen pH.Studies have found that low pH can compromise the integrity and permeability of the rumen epithelium(Steele et al., 2011).Adecrease in the pH can increase the level of free lipopolysaccharide released from dead Gram-negative bacteria (Gozho et al., 2007),which will bind with TLR4, trigger the activation of NF-κB signaling pathway and initiate the inflammatory response.Studies showed that sodium butyrate (SB) can suppress the inflammatory response by reducing the activation of NF-κB (Luhrs et al., 2002) and abolish the LPS-induced cytokines expression (Segain et al., 2000).Whats more, SB promoted the growth of rumen epithelium of calves (Gorka et al.,2011) and attenuates the inflammation and mucosal lesion in experimental acute ulcerative colitis (Vieira et al., 2012).The purpose of this study was to evaluate the role of sodium butyrate plays in high-concentrate diet-induced inflammation in rumen epithelium.
