Effect of tea saponins on milk performance, milk fatty acids, and immune function in dairy cows

Introduction Tea saponins (TSP) have been reported to have antimicrobial effects, decrease methane emission, and alter rumen fermentation by killing protozoa and increasing microbial protein synthesis (Hu et al., 2006;Guo et al., 2008;Wang et al., 2012).In addition, TSP also have been shown to have antioxidant capacity, antifungal and antiviral activity, and anti-inflamatory (Francis et al., 2002;Zhou et al., 2012;Li et al.,2014);therefore, TSP have been proposed as a potential substitution for antibiotics in animal feed (Francis et al., 2002).Milk and milk products act as an important source of amino acids, fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals (Huth et al., 2006).The effects of TSP on health indices such as antioxidant status and immune function are potentially important, but understudied, in dairy cows (Francis et al., 2002;Li et al., 2014).Therefore, our goal was to carry out a dose response study about the effect of TSP supplementation to dairy cows on their lactating performances, milk FA profile, antioxidative status, and immune response.
