Effects of intravenous C18 unsaturated fatty acids infusion onplasma fatty acid profile and mammary fatty acid metabolismin lactating dairy cows

Introduction Plasma FA profile could be variable with FA supplementation due to the complex metabolism processes of FAin different organs and tissues of dairy cows(Lanier et al., 2013).It is necessary to investigate the effects of supplemental FA on plasma FA profile in order to effectively regulate the benefit FAs contents in milk fat.Previous study showed that supplement of C18 unsaturated FA decreased milk fat short-and medium-chain fatty acids (SMCFA) contents (Bu et al., 2007, Drackley et al., 2007,Khas-Erdene et al., 2010).The special effect of individual FA or the combined effects between C18 unsaturated FA on SMCFA need to be investigated clearly.Biosynthesis of FA with less than 18C can be measured through mammary balance, because oxidative degradation of FA is negligible in the mammary gland (Annison et al., 1967, Enjalbert et al., 1998).The objective of this study was to infuse C18∶1 ci-9,C18∶2 n-6c and C18∶3 n-3 in combination and investigate the effects of withdrawing one of them from the combination on plasma FA profile and mammary metabolism in dairy cows.
