Effects of Phytosterols on Performance, Blood Cholesterols, and Antioxidant Capacity of Dairy Cows

Introduction Phytosterols have similar basic functions in plants as cholesterol in animals (Ostlund 2002),and play an important role in reducing blood cholesterol levels (Sanclemente et al.2012).Moreover, some experimental and epidemiological evidence suggests that phytosterols could also be used as an antioxidant in animals (Marineli et al.2012).Currently, phytosterols are used as an additive in animal husbandry to reduce blood cholesterol levels or to enhance the antioxidant capacity of animals.Dairy cows in late lactating stage receive excess nutrition, which leads to corpulence and high blood cholesterol levels (Bauman and Currie 1980).The high blood cholesterol level could reduce lactation efficiency and bring peroxidation damage to liver (Jia et al. 2007;Gu et al. 2008).Therefore, lowering the blood cholesterol levels and improving the antioxidant capacity of dairy cows are important for dairy production.Currently there are very few reports on the use of plant sterols in ruminants. Here, we evaluate the effects of phytosterols in milking performance, blood cholesterols, and antioxidant capacity of dairy cows.
