LGL (luxS-gmk-ldh) pathway may exerts a role in regulating Streptococcus.bovis lactate fermentation

Introduction Streptococcus bovis often predominates in the rumen when ruminants are fed a high concentrate diet, generally leads to an increase in lactate production in the rumen, which causes a drop in ruminal pH and contributes to the progress of rumen acidosis (Russell and Hino, 1985).To date, its fermentation pattern is dictated mainly by pH and substrate concentration (Chen et al., 2016).But in Asanuma and Hinos study (2002), we found that the proportion of lactate produced in S.bovis increased with the increasing of growth rate.Apart from it, Asanuma et al.(2004) also suggested that the expression of the luxS gene that encodes LuxS autoinducer 2 (AI-2) synthase in S.bovis declined with the decrease of growth rate.Since AI-2 operates as a universal quorum sensing (QS) system for many bacteria, it may control the expression of genes involved in metabolic pathways (An et al., 2014;Goo et al., 2015).We hypothesized that the luxS may regulate S.bovis lactate fermentation. The purpose of this study is to clarify how luxS is involved in the control of lactate fermentation in S.bovis by using bioinformatics method.
