Effect of hay supplementation timing on rumen microbiota in suckling calves

Introduction The digestive tract of all animals are colonized by a large number of microbes, and these microbes are more abundant in the rumen. These microbial populationsnot only undergo material and information exchange with the body but also participate in the metabolism of the host and maintain the bodys homeostasis and rumens normal digestion function. The composition of the entire microbiota the population levels in the rumen are affected by various factors, among which diet is the most important.Solid feed effect on fibrolytic and methanogenic microorganisms in the gastrointestinal tract of calves(Cesar et al.,2016).Whether to supplement the suckling calves with hay remains controversial. Most producers in the United States choose to supplement hay for weaning calves mainly fed on milk and starter(Drackley,2008).
