Bacterial profile in the rumen of dairy cow and their role in the degradation of rice straw

Introduction More than 250 million tons of rice straw was produced in China in 2013.Customarily, a lot of rice straw was openly bum by most farmers. However, the combustion of crop residues would pollute the air and result in smog and it is also a waste of energy. As Weimer et al.(2009) indicated that the rumen was the most elegant and highly evolved cellulose-digesting system in nature, it is very important to improve the utilization of crop residues as feed for ruminants, which could not only reduce the air pollution from combustion but also provide roughage for livestock industry. The microbiota in the rumen is responsible for the degradation of roughages and thus their colonization of the roughages is central to the degradation. In order to improve the utilization of rice straw in livestock industry, this experiment was aimed to investigate and identify the fibrolytic bacteria colonizing the rice straw in the rumen and their relationship to the fiber degradation.
