Protective effect of selenium on oxidative damage induced by lipopolysaccharide in bovine mammary epithelial cells

Introduction Bovine mammary epithelial cell (BMEC) is an important site for synthesis and secretion of milk composition, andits biosynthetic capacity reflectsthe potential of lactation. The dairy cattle experience oxidative stress due to the high metabolic rate of the bovine mammary epithelial cells during lactation, which leads to the decreased immune function, milk production and quality and the increased loss of economic (Sordillo et al.,2009).Excess NO production can lead to the generation of reactive nitrogen, the blocking of cell signaling pathway and oxidative stress.Selenium (Se) plays a range of biological functions in the form of selenoproteins(such as thioredoxin reductase (TrxR)) and is effective in attenuating oxidative stress. Some results strongly suggest thatTrxR has effect on regulating the synthesis of NO and preventingthe inflammation and oxidative stress(Ferret et al.,2000).The mechanism is still unclear. This study was carried out to investigate protective effect and mechanismof Se against lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-inducedoxidative stressandinflammation in bovine marmmary epithelial cells.
