FABP5 is a key regulator of milk fat synthesis in bovine mammary epithelial cells
Introduction The intracellular fatty acid binding proteins (FABPs) are a well-conserved family which functions as lipid chaperones.FABPs form a group of at least nine distinct protein types. The different isoforms of FABPs only possess moderate sequence homology, but their three-dimensional structures and ligand-binding properties remain highly conservedZimmerman and Veerkamp, 2002;Hotamisligil and Bernlohr, 2015.Recent findings also reveal that FABPs are far more than simple reservoirs of fatty acids, they are crucial mediators of lipid metabolism, cell growth and differentiation, cellular signaling and gene transcription.Studies also suggest that FABPs have individual functions in different tissues despite the similarities in their tertiary structure, and ongoing studies are identifying the mechanistic complexity and vast biological diversity of different isoforms of FABPsThumser et al., 2014;Yu et al., 2016.
