Diketopyrrolopyrrole-Based Therapeutic Nanoparticles for Photoacoustic Imaging Guided Phototherapy

Comparing to conventional therapeutic methods for cancer (such as surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy), photothermal therapy (PTT) and photodynamic therapy (PDT) are two main noninvasive phototherapies due to the low side-effects, high selectivity and effectiveness1.PTT and PDT are usually induced by near-infrared (NIR) light then the excited agents inside tumor can generate heat or reactive oxygen species (ROS) to kill tumor cells.Photoacoustic imaging (PAI) is non-invasive and non-ionizing imaging modality with high selectivity and deep penetration2.PAI guided PTT or PDT would be extraordinary beneficial to precise tumor treatment. To realize this ambition, a therapeutic agent, possessing high photothermal conversion efficiency and/or efficient ROS generation as well as PAI effect, good biocompatibility and ability to target tumor, is highly desired.
