Polyvinyl Butyral Enhanced Polyvinylidene Fluoride Nanofibrous Membranes for Breathable and Waterproof Application

Introduction Be identified as the second skin of people, breathable barrier fabrics that allow moisture vapor transforming from wearers while preventing the penetration of water can provide effective comfort and protection for human beings.Breathable and waterproof membranes are the core functional layer of the breathable barrier fabrics1,2.Generally, the commercial breathable and waterproof membranes are classified roughly into two types: hydrophilic thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) nonporous membranes and microporous membranes.TPU hydrophilic membranes can provide good waterproofness due to their nonporous structure, but its poor moisture transmittance (4 kg m-2 d-1) made the wearer uncomfortable3.As one representative of typical microporous membranes, polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) superhydrophobic membranes exhibited good water resistance and modest moisture penetrability (6.3 kg m-2 d-1) owing to their clearly visible system of holes and interconnected passage-ways4.These two kinds of breathable-waterproof membranes were fabricated by extrusion process and biaxial stretching method, respectively.Nevertheless, traditional techniques like the both suffer from many disadvantages containing complicated manufacturing processes, high cost and generation of persistent solid pollutants.
