Monitoring Eggshell Temperature during Chicken Egg Incubation to Detect Egg Status

Monitoring the incubation process demands continuous assessment of embryo status, which is to date a destructive event as breaking open the eggs is required. Therefore, a non invasive means to assess embryo development is of interest to both research and industry. An alternative non-invasive method is presented, which measuring the eggshell temperature using small accurate temperature sensors.Continuous recordings of eggshell temperature (Tegg) and corresponding micro-environmental temperature (Tair) of the focal eggs were analysed and the temperature profiles of plotted delta Tegg (Tegg-Tair) for different embryo states showed different characteristics. Therefore, it was possible to obtain the embryo status of individual egg in real-time during incubation based on their different temperature profiles.
