Assessment of Feeding Behavior of Broilers through Image Analysis
When subjected to high temperatures broilers showed a reduction in food consumption and tend to remain prostrate with open wing as a strategy to try to dissipate body heat to the environment. One can check the influence of the thermal environment on the welfare of animals through analysis of their behavioral patterns. This study aimed to develop and test a computational method to evaluate food behavior of broiler during growout, subjected to cyclic diurnal heat stress. The images relating to the monitoring of bird activities were processed and analyzed with the aid of computer program MATLAB 7.9(R), from which were extracted information regarding the frequency of feeder use by the animals in each of the thermal conditions studied. There was a reduction in frequency of feeder use by the broilers subjected to heat stress. The implemented algorithm proved to be a reliable methodology for assessment of broilers feeding behavior, presenting a low percentage error compared to data obtained by the visual method.
