Feeding and Nesting Behaviors of Laying Hens in Enriched Colony Housing
1.Introduction Legislations and/or demand by food service/grocer sectors have led to transitioning of egg production systems from conventional cage to alternative housing (e.g., enriched colony, aviary cage-free) has been occurring, especially in Europe and the United States. However, numerous questions about the design and operation of the relatively new alternative hen-housing systems remain to be addressed. The objective of this work was to collect benchmark data on feeding and nesting behaviors of individual laying hens in an enriched colony housing (ECH) system.Data from this study will provide insight into simultaneous feeding of the hens, thus implication for feeder space allocation, and variability among the individual hens.Similar information will result regarding the nesting behavior.
