Effect of Water Basins on Concrete Floor Surface Temperature in Pens with and without Water Basins on Swine Behavior

The objective of the research was to measure the floor temperature in pens with and without access to a water basin system (a flooded area of the pen) and determine its influence on pig behavior during the grow-finish phase.Forty pigs were housed in two pens with and without access to the water basin system. The surface temperature of the concrete floor was measured hourly at four points from 7:30am to 5:30pm.Behavioral observations were made directly. The average floor temperature and animal behavior were recorded for each trial. It was observed that the pen with water basin had a lower floor surface temperature. This could be from fewer animals lying on the floor, and from evaporative cooling from the pen floor surface with a water basin. There was a smaller percentage of animals lying in the pen with the water basin system in the afternoon compared to those in the pen without a water basin system, which may help explain the reduced floor surface temperature.
