Research and Development of Intelligent Monitoring Technology for Grazing Sheep Welfare
Animal welfare is related to the healthy animal fanning and a safe production of livestock.It directly affects the quality of livestock productions and indirectly affects food safety for human beings.Inner Mongolia is the main livestock production region in China.Meanwhile, Inner Mongolia is the pivotal area properly combining modem intensive as well as traditional small scale farming.It has more than 100 million sheep which accounts for up to 1/3 of the total number of sheep in the entire county.Grazing sheep farming plays an important role in the national economy, whereas sheep welfare has not been paid enough attention in actual production.An environmental welfare evaluation system of grazing sheep needs further investigations.To improve grazing sheep welfare, impact factors, occurrence mechanism and sheep behavior are the basic areas of animal welfare research.The western counties are paying a great attention on animal welfare.Animal behavior which affects animal production, reflect the relationship between livestock and the environment and the relationship among individual animals.Precisely and effectively monitoring individual animal and collecting the related information are very helpful to study animal physiology, health, and animal welfare.They are necessary to achieve automatic and healthy farming and meat treatability.Wisdom animal husbandry development both in China and abroad is introduced in this paper.The intelligent monitoring technologies applied in grazing sheep welfare research include audio analysis technology, visual detection technology, monitoring technology, behavior characteristics identification technology, satellite positioning technology, and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) cruise technology.UAV is closely related to the grassland animal husbandry as welfare sheep breeding production, such as the common behavior of the application of monitoring technology research status quo, and prospect the future research direction of grazing sheep breeding monitoring technology.
