Dynamic thermo-mechanical properties of polyimide fibers by addition of multi-wall carbon nanotubes

By co-polymerizing p-phenylenediamine (PDA), 4,4-diaiminodiphenyl ether (ODA) and pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA), polyamide acid solution was obtained and wet-spun to form as-spun fiber. And then heat treatment and hot drawing were conducted on as-spun fiber to complete imidization and prepare the final PI fiber. The addition of muti-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs)into PI matrix was adopted to improve the strength of PI fiber. But the poor dispersibility of MWCNTs in PAA solution and its weak interaction with PI matrix limited the improvement of strength for PI/MWCNTs composite fiber. So the functionalized MWCNTs (f-MWCNTs) were prepared via the nondestructive Friedel-Crafts acylation. The PI chains were grafted on the surface of MWCNTs which was proved by transmission electron microscope (TEM) images and they could serve as a medium to improve the interfacial interaction between MWCNTs and polyimide matrix.Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images showed that PI fiber presented a transformation from brittle fracture to ductile fracture by adding f-MWCNTs into PI matrix. The testing results showed that the storage modulus of PI/f-MWCNTs (1 wt%) was higher than that of PI fiber.
