Preparation of polyvinyl alcohol/chitosan composite nanofiber membrane by electrospinning
Chitosan (CS) nanofibers have received great research interest due to its biocompatibility and antibacterial properties, but CS was difficult to be electrospun alone.Poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA)is very suitable for electrospinning, thus it is necessary to produce PVA/CS composite nanofibers with higher CS concentration to add the antibacterial property to PVA nanofibers. In this paper, antibacterial properties of chitosan were studied as a function of different viscosities. The results showed that the antibacterial property of high-viscosity chitosan (CSH), which could reach 86.7% against Escherichia coli, was better than that of low-viscosity chitosan (CSL).PVA / CS nanofiber membranes were prepared using CSH (1 wt%)and PVA(8wt%) blending solution by electrospinning. The effect of electrospinning parameters on jet stability and membrane morphology were investigated. The results showed that the optimal electrospinning parameters were the spinning voltage of 23kv, the spinning distance of 10cm and the flow rate of 0.16ml/h.These results demonstrated that CS/PVA composite nanofiber membranes could be used as a promising material for antibacterial and filtration applications, and CSH would be a good candidate to fabricate antibacterial nanofibers.
