Development of high density nonwoven structure for improving stab resistance

The purpose of this paper is to enhance stab resistance of body armor by developing one new high-density nonwoven structure.Icepick usually injures Japanese police since guns are controlled strictly in Japan. Thus this study is aimed to improve the stab resistance against icepick. Most presenting anti-stab body armor researches are focused on varied fabric impregnated with resin, which always bring problems of high cost and complicated processing.Seldom researches are about improving stab resistance by nonwoven structure while it shows better stab resistance than fabric. In this paper, Different density nonwoven structures, ranging from about 0.14 g/cm3 to 0.46 g/cm3, are obtained by changing stacked layers of Kevlar/polyester nonwoven under hot press. It is proposed hot press nonwoven in two methods, multilayer hot press and monolayer hot press. The stab resistance is evaluated according to NIJ Standard-0115.00.The relation among nonwoven density, stab resistance and flexural rigidity has been researched. The different properties by two methods are also discussed.Result shows that stab resistance and flexural rigidity climb with increasing nonwoven density, but flexural rigidity by monolayer hot press just shows slightly change with growing nonwoven density.Though maximum load in two methods without huge gap, flexural rigidity by monolayer press is much smaller, which attributes to better wear comfort.
