Coloration of nanofibers assisted by ultrasonic energy
Fabrication of nanofibers via electrospinning is a very simple technique to prepare fibers with very high surface to volume ratio. It offers advantage of controlling and tuning the characteristics at nano scale, thus ensures higher performance in comparison to conventional fibers in many applications.Although, electrospun nanofibers have been successfully exploited for numerous technical applications ranging from biomedical, filtration, catalysis and energy to protective products, however, there exists wider room of research for exploring application of nanofibers for aesthetic applications. For this, we studied influence of ultrasonication on coloration of cellulose nanofibers in our current research work. The cellulose acetate nanofibers were electrospun and then deacetylated with NaOH in order to convert cellulose acetate into cellulose Ⅱ.The two dyes used for coloration of the nanofibers were CI reactive black 5 and CI reactive red 195.The samples were characterized by SEM and FTIR for morphological study and confirmation of deacetylation respectively. The dyeing parameters were optimized. The results confirmed fabrication of nanofibers with smooth morphology and conversion of cellulose acetate into cellulose Ⅱ.It was revealed that the ultrasonication improved color yield (K/S values) of the nanofibers. Our research concluded successful coloration of the cellulose nanofibers with the two reactive dyes assisted by ultrasonication and improvement in color yield of the cellulose nanofibers.
