Reactive Superhydrophobic/hydrophilic and Biofunctional Surface based on Cellulose-based Fabric

In nature, superhydrophobic surfaces are of plenty of usage from fundamental research to practical application such as self-cleaning, anti-fogging, oil-water separation, patterning and so on.For the past decades, fluorochemicals have been widely applied in superhydrophobic functionalization for their good performance but restricted for high cost and heavy pollution especially the influence on human health. In this work, low-cost and environmental-friendly short silane chain without fluoride-containing group was used for fabricating superhydrophobic coating.A photoactive, transparent coating was obtained by polycondensation of trichlorovinylsilane (TCVS)on cotton fabrics and it shows excellent superhydrophocity. With the vinyl group grafted on the substrate, the coating can be easily functionalized by using photoclick thiol-ene reaction.Photoclick thiol-ene reaction has all the desirable features of a click reaction, being highly efficient, simple to execute with no side products and proceeding rapidly to high yield.Further, the thiol-ene reaction is most frequently photoinitiated, particularly for photopolymerizations resulting in highly uniform polymer networks. It makes it possible to realize the rapid wettability change from superhydrophobic to superhydrophilic. The reaction also can be applied in bringing in biomolecules like peptides, proteins, antibodies for biofunctionalization.
