Structure and Properties of Cotton Grafted with Trifluoroethyl methacrylate

  In order to enhance the water repellence property of cotton fabric, cotton fabric was grafted using trifluoroethyl methacrylate (TFEMA) monomer via potassium persulfate (KPS)initiation method in an aqueous medium.The structure of grafted cotton fabric was characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and wide angle X-ray diffraction (XRD).The SEM images of the grafted cotton displayed the difference from the untreated one.FT-IR characterization of the grafted cotton indicated that TFEMA monomer was successfully grafted onto the cotton fabric surface.XPS analysis indicated that the fluorine element of the grafted cotton existing on the surface of the cotton fabric.The XRD result revealed that the grafting reaction did not change the main crystalline form of cotton.The characterization results showed that TFEMA was successfully grafted onto the surface of cotton fabric.And the properties of the grafted cotton fabric were also investigated.The water repellence of the grafted cotton fabric was better than that of the untreated cotton fabric.The adhesion of the grafted cotton fabric could reduce to 80 μN, and the surface contact angle of the grafted cotton fabric could reach 140.1°.Furthermore, the whiteness, air permeability and moisture regain of the grafted cotton fabric decreased slightly compared with the untreated cotton fabric.Cotton fabric with good water repellent property could be obtained, which had little effect on the intrinsic properties of cotton fabric.
