Screening and growth performance of alkali tolerance mulberry varieties for boosting sericulture

Sericulture industry economy mainly depends on the mulberry as it is solely food plant for the silkworm Bombyx mori.Different parts of India are not well suitable for agriculture and sericulture due to high alkalinity of soil. Therefore, we conducted our study in high alkaline soil land ranges between pH 8.5-9.2 to screen the best alkali tolerance mulberry varieties suitable for sericulture on the basis of growth performance and its biochemical constituents. We have selected five different mulberry varieties, namely AR-14, S-1, S-146, BR-2 and S-1635 out of all varieties grown in alkaline soil. After collection of three years of experiment data, our findings revealed that out of five mulberry varieties, S-1635 and BR-2 varieties were performed well in respect of most of growth parameters and biochemical constituents.Highest shoot length (87.31 cm) and leaves per plant (329.50) was recorded in S-1, whereas maximum leaf area (202.25 cm2), leaves weight (422.25/100 g), Internodal distance (5.24 cm) and leaf yield (36.14/ha) were observed in BR-2 variety followed by S-1635.Subsequently, highest carbohydrate (0.527 mg/g) was recorded in S-1635 followed with BR-2 (0.494 mg/g), while protein content was higher in AR-14(0.493 mg/g).Moisture retention capacity (58.05), crude protein content (22.50 %) and total chlorophyll (1.98 mg/g) were noticed significantly higher in BR-2 variety followed with S-1635 variety. In a nutshell, among five mulberry varieties, BR-2 and S-1635 varieties performed well on growth and biochemical parameters, and able to augments the productivity of mulberry crop under alkaline soil. Therefore, we recommended BR-2 and S-1635 mulberry varieties are suitable for alkaline or waste land, and by adopting those varieties, sericulture entrepreneurs can enhance or uplift to sericulture industry.
