A New Technique for Pothole Patching of Asphalt Pavement and the Introduction to a Special Purpose Equipment
This paper compares and differentiates three main approaches for pothole patching, e.g.cold material patching, hot recovery patching, and hot material patching,with respect to the quality of repairing, achieved length of service life and the associated repairing cost.It shows that excavating the pit and filling in the hot materials of asphalt mixture is optimal.In addition, by contrasting the distribution and the magnitude of stress, and the coefficient of concentrated stress between the round-shaped pothole patching and the commonly practiced square-shaped alternative, I demonstrate that the former outperforms the latter in terms of the compactness and evenness of the filled new material,water sealing at the edge and the riding comfort.Accordingly, this paper introduces the design, the basic structure and the operational mechanism of a newly invented model of a round-shaped pothole milling machine(Chinese Patent No.:ZL202010147947.7 and ZL201210003513.9).This machine is able to mill out a round pit for a range of 600 to 1000mm in diameter that well caters to the size of the pothole while operates under an automatic recycling system that simultaneously cleans the milled scraps.The excavated pit is then paved with a round and extremely clean fill-in that has the optimal depth,the regular shape and the vertical edge.The marginal contribution of this paper is that the pothole patching process as facilitated by the introduced round-shaped pothole milling machine is found to boost the repairing quality relative to traditional technique of square-shaped pothole patching.Therefore, the new technique can be easily applied to the airfield and highway pavement for it brings about the enhanced efficiency of asphalt pavement maintenance, the extended length of service life, the cost-effectiveness and the more refined construction procedure.
