A Novel Force Controlled Method for Ultra-precision Grinding of Brittle Material

For grinding brittle material, the dynamic grinding force will decrease the surface accuracy and cause subsurface damage. This paper presents a novel force controlled method for ultra-precision grinding of brittle material, aiming at guaranteeing surface accuracy and controlling the grinding force simultaneously.According to the grinding force model, grinding force is a function of the feed rate of grinding wheel and the depth of cut.The grinding force is controlled by adjusting the feed rate of grinding wheel and keeping the depth of cut unchanged to ensure the surface accuracy. The force control loop doesnt affect the position control loop. Therefore, the surface accuracy and the subsurface damage can be controlled at the same time. The stabilization and the effectiveness of the grinding force controlled method, which is conducted based on an ultra-precision optical grinding machine, are validated by simulation.
