The effect of oils on water (OoW) comparing with minimum quantity of lubrication (MQL) on tool wear under different cryogenic environment in finishing turning 17-4PH alloy
Introduction Cooling methods play an important role in metal cutting and people focus on environmentally, friendly and economic alternatives to achieve better machining effect. The hybrid near-dry cutting techniques have potential to solve the machinability of DTC material. This work investigated the effect of oils on water (OoW) and minimal quantity lubrication (MQL) under different cryogenic environment: cooling air (CA) and liquid nitrogen (LN) in finishing turning 17-4PH.And the cutting temperature, cutting force and tool wear were studied. It is found that the performance of MQL and OoW was inextricably bound up with cutting temperature and the greatest improvement in tool life using LNOoW in above cooling methods. This may be attributed mainly to the reduction in cutting zone temperature and the promotion in the chip-tool lubrication under cryogenic condition.
