Research on Controllability of Cutting Edge Radius of Diamond Tools Based on Focused Ion Beam
A method of fabricating the diamond cutting tool with controllable edge radius was proposed.The relationship between FIB irradiation time and edge radius was studied.Whether the tool is in amorphous or single crystalline state respectively, the edge radius increases linearly nearly with the increase of FIB irradiation time.Moreover, four cutting tools with edge radius about 25 nm,41 nm, 63 nm and 103 nm were used to carry out a series of nano-cutting tests.The experimental results indicated that the controllable tool processing method is feasible.Besides, the minimum cutting thickness increases with the increases of the tool edge radius, but the ratio of minimum cutting thickness (MCT) to edge radius is between 0.36 to 0.51 with little change, verifying the conclusion experimentally that the effect of tool edge radius on the MCT is significant.
