Experimental investigation of electrical discharge machining (die sinking) on TC4 Titanium alloy using rotating grooved electrode
The objective of this study is to investigate the influence of rotating grooved electrode on characteristics of Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) process.A combination between grooved electrodes with various shapes and titanium alloy TC4 as workpiece has been selected in this study. The study was conducted using copper bars with equal circumference which has straight and spiral grooves to form the volume space for electrolyte.Weights of electrode and workpiece before and after experiments were done to get the abrasion loss and the material removal respectively, while measuring the dimensional accuracy and surface roughness of workpiece to compare the effect of grooved electrode. The comparative experiments between non-grooved electrode without revolution and grooved electrode with certain revolution showed that the former outweighed the latter in terms of processing effects. Finally, the experiments of various grooved electrodes indicates that spiral grooves results in the minimum electrode wear compared with straight grooved electrode, the magnitude of helix angle takes obvious effect on electrode wear.Difference in dimensional accuracy of surface between electrodes with various shapes can be left out, while overlooking the corresponding one in terms of surface roughness, which suggests spiral grooved electrode with the optimized helix angle will have a promising application prospect.
