Experimental Assessments of Surface Roughness induced by Ultrasonic Elliptical Vibration Cutting (UEVC) for micro-grooves pattern

The demand in manufacturing the micro-grooves pattern has increased significantly in the tribology field. This paper shows our preliminary experimental results of surface roughness on micro-grooves that were fabricated using ultrasonic elliptical vibration curing (UEVC) method. Our experimental results showed that the surface roughness and morphology of micro-grooves in the UEVC method at relative low curing speeds are more improved than that in the ordinary curing (OC)method. The surface roughness of the micro-grooves in the UEVC method increases when the curing speed of micro-grooving gradually increases.Meanwhile, in the case of the OC method, its surface roughness gradually decreases when the curing speed of micro-grooving gradually increases.Based on the preliminary assessments, the UEVC method is suitable to manufacture the micro-grooves pattern in relative low curing speeds (less than 2.5 m/min).
