Study on the variations of hardness and residual stress for surface of 45 carbon steel polished by abrasive flow machining

Abrasive Flow Machining (AFM) technology can be applied in finishing of complex components to achieve high performances by reducing surface roughness significantly. However, there are few researches on the evolution of surface residual stress and surface hardness in abrasive flow machining. In this paper, by three workpieces of 45 carbon steel without heat treatment, quenching and hardening and tempering, investigations are taken into the effects of abrasive flow machining on surface roughness, microhardness and residual stress of components.Surface roughness, microhardness and residual stress are measured by the surface profiler, micro-sclerometer and X-ray diffractometer, respectively. The results show that the surface roughness of workpieces after abrasive flow machining decreases significantly with high uniformity. Moreover, AFM is capable of inducing compressive residual stress into the finished surfaces and increasing the microhardness.
