Study on tool wear during trimming of CFRP
Different wear types of diamond coated cemented carbide cutter were observed during trimming of CFRP laminates and the wear mechanism was discussed. The results show that the normal cutting force and cutting temperature increase with the wear of cutter. While the tangential cutting force decreases with the wear of cutter. The high temperature of cut-ting zone results in the flow of epoxy resin which decreases the retention of carbon fiber. At the same time, epoxy resin smearing gets more severe on the finished surface of 90° & 135° plies. The main wear type of diamond coated cemented carbide cutter is abrasion wear which is caused by the continuous impact and abrasion effect of the fractured carbon fiber and epoxy resin particles. The tiny chipping in the area of tool edge and tool nose was observed.Abrasion and the peeling off of diamond coating are caused by the generation and evolution of small crack on the flank face.
