Study on the Difference of Milling Performance between Laser Sintering Titanium Alloy and forging Titanium Alloy

Additive manufacturing have drawn much attention due to its high efficiency and suitable to manufacture a complicated geometry with tolerable precision. In aerospace industry, certain workpiece is fabricated by additive manufacturing.Laser sintering is a type of additive manufacturing. However, the cutting performance of laser sintering material has not been fully discussed. In this paper, the author studied the machinability of laser sintering titanium alloy and forging titanium alloy by comparing cutting force, cutting temperature, surface roughness and tool wear. The result showed that cutting force and cutting temperature of laser sintering titanium alloy was lower than cast titanium alloy at most of the cutting parameter. In most cases, surface topography of machined laser sintering titanium alloy was better than forging titanium alloy.Cutting tools machining forging titanium alloy experienced more severe wear than machining laser sintering titanium alloy. Therefore, laser sintering titanium alloy had better machinability.
