Cutting performance of cubic boron nitride coated cutting inserts in turning hardened ductile iron
In order to open a route for adherent, thick cBN coatings and prolonged tool life in cutting tools industries, it is indispensable to study cutting performance of cBN coated cutting inserts. In this paper, the research was carried out on cutting performance of as-deposited cBN coated Si3N4 inserts by turning hardened ductile iron under dry conditions. The cutting force and wear of cBN coated inserts were investigated compared with TiAlN coatings. The reduction of the axial, radial and tangential cutting force component of cBN coatings are 16.0%, 52.0% and 23.8%, respectively,in comparison with TiAlN coatings at identical condition. The average flank wear rate of cBN coatings is 103-μm/km, which is significantly lower than those of TiAlN coating (472-μm/km) and uncoated Si3N4 insert (607-μm/km).The results show that cBN coated inserts have great potentials in hardened and ferrous materials machining.
