Dispersion of TiO2 Nanoparticles in Wool Keratin Solution and the Fixation Finishing on Wool Fabrics

  Titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs), are most widely employed in various applications, particularly in the functionalization of textiles due to its excellent photocatalytic ability.However, the combination process of TiO2 NPs with other textile substrates has generated problems.These problems include uneven dispersion of nanoparticles in the finishing bath, poor fixation fastness, use of toxicity fixation agents and water pollution caused by the process.In this research, wool fabric was chosen as the substrate and keratin protein extracted from waste wool served as an environmentally friendly and non-toxic finishing agent with good affinity to wool fibers.The effect of the different dispersion agents on the dispersion stability of the TiO2 nanoparticles and their sizes was investigated by an ultraviolet spectrophotometer and a nanoparticle size analyzer, respectively.Sodium dodecyl sulfate was the preeminent dispersant used to optimize the dispersion system for the wool fabric finishing process.Results review that increasing the keratin concentration promoted the stabilization of NPs, but also changes the size of NPs.The surface morphology of the functionalized fabrics was observed under a scanning electron microscope.The TiO2 NPs were evenly fixed on the fabric surface, and consequentially reduced the wool felting texture.This finishing system has the potential to develop functionalized wool textiles for high value-added applications, such as UV protective fabrics or toxic gas elimination household textiles.
